Alexander Grünwald was suspended, Niels Hahn celebrated his starting line-up debut for Austria Wien in the 331st Vienna Derby. Patrick Wimmer started alongside Benedikt Pichler up front instead of Bright Edomwonyi, who was not in the squad this time. Otherwise, the starting line-up remained unchanged compared to the cup triumph against Hartberg.

Rapid coach Dietmar Kühbauer returned to the coaching team after an illness. After the victory against Dundalk there were two changes: Marcel Ritzmaier and Kelvin Arase started for Melih Ibrahimoglu and Taxiarchis Fountas.

Rapid took the lead, Wimmer equalized

Rapid Wien had the first chance of the game, Ercan Kara shot past the goal after assist by Christoph Knasmüllner. In return, Aleksandar Jukić put Rapid’s goalkeeper Paul Gartler to the test, he was able to parry the shot (3’). Thorsten Schick brought the hosts into the lead in the 7th minute, the midfielder scored after a cross by Maximilian Ullmann. Jukić tried a direct corner, Gartler fought off with difficulty (11th). Austria Wien equalized in the 19th minute, Patrick Wimmer headed a free kick from Manprit Sarkaria and scored the 1-1.

Patrick Pentz saved Austria Wien from another deficit after a counterattack by the home team. Our goalie brilliantly parried shots from Knasmüllner and Kara from very close range (23’). After a corner by Markus Suttner, Erik Palmer-Brown brought the ball towards the goal, Gartler cleared (34’). In his own penalty area, the American defender threw himself into a shot by Mateo Barac (40’). Patrick Pentz was still in top form, fending off a header by Maximilian Hofmann and the follow-up shot by Srdjan Grahovac (41’). The first half ended with the 1-1.

Pentz in great shape

The second half also started with some chances. Kara had another chance, after a corner for Rapid Wien, but his shot went over the goal (49’). Patrick Wimmer captured the ball but Gartler saved Benedikt Pichler's finish (51’). Then the “Pentz show” was on again: the number one spectacularly turned a header by Hofmann over the bar (53’). Kara missed from very close range (59’).

Christoph Monschein came for Patrick Wimmer, Dominik Fitz replaced Manprit Sarkaria. The game calmed down in the course of the second half, and Pentz only had to intervene again in the 76th minute, when Marcel Ritzmaier tried with a shot from the far. Aleksandar Jukić shot over the goal (78’). Substitute Yusuf Demir hit the outside bar, Pentz remained the winner against Kara in a one-on-one (82’, 83’).
